This collaboration marks the first research project by a notable Chinese university using scanning lidar technology to assess wind turbine design and performance and analyse onshore and offshore wind.
Leading renewable energy consultancy, SgurrEnergy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with North China Electric Power University (NCEPU) in Beijing yesterday as part of a research collaboration into wind turbine power characteristics and design improvement. This collaboration marks the first research project by a notable Chinese university using scanning lidar technology to assess wind turbine design and performance and analyse onshore and offshore wind.
The project is set to last up to three years and SgurrEnergy’s scope of services will include the deployment of its remote sensing lidar device, Galion Lidar, as well as technical assistance, data collection and analysis. The parties will work together to develop a measurement service for NCEPU clients, which will include a lidar wind measurement campaign, power curve assessment, wind turbine performance analysis and control system improvement.
This landmark contract signing took place on Monday 2 December 2013 between SgurrEnergy’s head of Chinese operations, Cathryn Chu, and NCEPU’s Professor Tian at an event in Beijing. The signing, which took place during UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s trade visit to China, was witnessed by Lord Livingston, Minister Designate for Trade & Investment.
SgurrEnergy’s Cathryn Chu, said: “The North China Electric Power University is the first university in China to set up a renewable energy college. The dedication and commitment to research in the renewables industry follows years of notable scientific projects across China.
“The research collaboration between NCEPU and SgurrEnergy will provide important findings to inform improvements to control systems and overall design of wind turbines in China. We are looking forward to embarking on this project with NCEPU and seeing how the research results will influence the renewable energy industry, both in China and internationally.”
Speaking of the UK’s relationship with China, Lord Livingston, Minister Designate for Trade and Investment, said: ““More and more UK companies are selling their products and services to China with exports almost doubling since 2009 – reaching more than £1 billion per month. The UK is one of the most open countries to Chinese investment and was the most popular European destination for Chinese investment last year.
“The raft of deals shows that the UK and China truly are partners for growth – China’s growing appetite for British expertise proves that the UK is one of the most attractive inward investment destinations in the world.”
Galion Lidar is a laser based wind profiler device for wind speed measurement and directional data capture. The mature remote sensing technology is now successfully being used for wind mapping applications in all environments and terrains. With its unique all-sky scanning capability and up to 4km range, Galion Lidar is a pioneering, cutting-edge wind speed measurement technology which is transforming the way that we understand wind.
The first trial test at NCEPU’s state laboratory facility in North China will be a measurement campaign with SgurrEnergy’s Galion Lidar on NCEPU’s own 1.5MW wind turbine.
