On parts of the former Jännersdorf military training area (Prignitz, Brandenburg), it is planned to erect the Marienfliess Solar Cluster in several phases with final completion in 2013.

The solar cluster consists of several, spatially separated solar construction sites within an approximately 430-hectare planning area and will achieve a total output in excess of 100 MW. The four construction sites near Jännersdorf will be linked together to form a solar park of the same name. Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of February. The Krempendorf solar park is located further east on two construction sites.
“The approval procedure has been a rather protracted process. The requirements for the compensatory and supplementary measures were very high, so we had to readjust the project design,” according to Jürgen Will, CEO of Parabel AG. “With the shape of the clusters that has now been attained, we have not only met all ecological requirements but have also managed to organically integrate the individual solar arrays into the landscape. In addition, the local community and environment will now benefit from newly created public paths, the planting of valuable mixed forest areas instead of the existing monocultures, and the designation of new biotopes.”
Large parts of the area will have to be cleared of munitions since the site is contaminated with munitions fragments. Other scrap metal and remnants from the time when the site was used for military purposes will also be removed. The environmental and species conservation measures include the resettlement of sand lizards. These and other measures will be organised and conducted by Parabel AG in dialogue with environmental conservation organisations.
The municipal federation of Meyenburg, to which the Marienfliess municipality belongs, is well on the way to becoming one of the most important renewable energy regions in Germany. The first wind turbine in Brandenburg was installed there back in 1991.
Large wind farms have now shot up in the surrounding area. The new solar power generation will enable further local business taxes to flow into the Marienfliess municipality, with the project companies being based in the municipality’s Jännersdorf and Krempendorf districts.
