The increase of ethanol demand is a global trend.
SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL
Expanding productivity and ensuring product quality are some of the major challenges for sugar and ethanol plants around the world. In Brazilian operations in particular, equipment reliability and highly efficient processes are two key priorities to increase Brazilian plants’ competitive advantages.
With this favorable scenario, plants must be prepared to manage the expected growth while meeting these production needs with technology and practices that ensure a sustainable future for the industry.
To contribute to the success of the sugar and ethanol sector, GE has been a technology provider to the industry by delivering the newest technology and services that are key to the plant’s operations throughout the entire production process.
To this effect, GE (NYSE: GE) will be an active participant at Brazil’s Feira Fenasucro, showcasing products and services for the sugar and ethanol sectors that are designed to help processes more efficient and support industry growth. The trade show will take place August 21 to September 3 in Sertãozinho, State of São Paulo, Brazil, which represents more than 50 percent of the sugarcane harvest of the country.
“As GE continues to invest and grow in Latin America, we remain keenly aware of the need for a wide range of both economic and sustainable energy, water and productivity solutions,” said Tadeu Justi, region executive for Latin America—water and process technologies for GE Power & Water. “The sugarcane and alcohol industries continue to open new markets within the energy arena, and GE’s broad portfolio of products and services can help meets this sector’s unique needs.”
The following advanced solutions and offerings for the sugar and ethanol sector will be showcased at GE’s booth (# 141 – Pavilion 1) during Fenasucro 2010.

Jenbacher Gas Engines
The Jenbacher gas engine division of GE is one of the world’s most renowned companies in the field of waste-to-energy applications with a delivered fleet of more than 1,700 engines running on biogas from anaerobic digestion. Power generation with biomass from ethanol production is possible with GE’s Jenbacher gas engines.
The sugar industry is very important in Brazil, especially for the production of ethanol fuel. The process of making highly valuable ethanol fuel creates several by-products, which also contain certain energy. One by-product is the remaining woody part of the sugar cane, called bagasse, which is commonly used as a bio fuel in the boilers at ethanol plants for the steam demand in the processes. Another by-product is called vinasse, which is an effluent from the ethanol production after distillation. This waste stream has a low energy content and is often used as fertilizer. But the energy content in the vinasse is still high enough to be used in an anaerobic digestion process, producing biogas that can then be converted into valuable electricity and heat in cogeneration systems based on gas engines.
GE Power & Water’s Jenbacher gas engine division is a leading manufacturer of gas-fuelled reciprocating engines, packaged generator sets and cogeneration units for power generation. GE’s gas engine technology covers an output range of 0.25 to 4.4 MW and can operate on a broad variety of gases while offering high levels of efficiency, durability and reliability.
